ANCIENT FIGURES
2023
Basalt stone
Smallest figure: 12”x 44”x18" (30 x 112 x 46 cm)
Largest figure: 14”x52”x8” (36 x 134 x 22 cm)
Each of these four sculptures is composed from a single stone, split according to cracks found on its surface. This process of collaborating with the rock’s own marks and shape is means of honoring its turbulent journey through time. By expanding the stone’s mass along these fissures, the tension held within its body is relieved. The resulting fragments are vertically arranged allowing each entity to stand upright, able to meet its visitors eye-to-eye.
These sculptures are currently on display at Wailoa Art Center, Hilo, HI
