GATEWAY (2021)
Japanese Mulberry Paper, Aluminum
110” x 78” x 70” (280 x 198 x 178 cm)
This sculpture is visual expression of prayer which extends from the artists desire to create a passageway to a realm beyond the physical world. Pulsating with a slow, silent breath, it seems to exist in the liminal space between moments in time and space.
Its sharp, geometric facets are layered to create an undulating yet distinctly architectural form reminiscent of sacred architecture from the Islamic World. Upon close inspection, however, each of its slices also reference sails or wings, levitating and rippling with subtle motion.
As one observes Gateway, they may find that it reverberates and alternates between two existences— a sculptural object to be seen, and and an opening in space to be entered. Its scale and form invites viewers to proceed through it, connecting to the ways in which one’s movement through a sacred space may be a transformative experience leading to contemplation or spiritual awakening.
