VOID TRIAD (2020)
Relief print from Stone (Ink, basalt, paper)
Each print: 36” x 48” (91 x 122 cm)
Three slabs of basalt stone were inked and burnished (printed) by hand in a manner similar to the tradition of Japanese woodblock printing.
A triptych of prints which simultaneously emphasize both absence and presence, the compositions represent the interconnection of earth and sky, or the interrelationship between the physical and spiritual.
The form also connects to the Zen calligraphic tradition of "enso", a circle drawn with a single brushstroke. This simple action is a means of creating a window through witch the calligrapher may contemplate the void, or absolute potential of seemingly empty space.
Each of these works then become a portal to a placeless place of simplicity, serenity, and solace.
