It is intuitive to believe that stone can offer us something, but even more intriguing is the idea that we can offer something back to stone -- I bear witness to the unfolding ecology of stone by paying homage to the animacy and spirituality inherent within these ancient entities. These four obelisks were split from a single massive slab of columnar basalt. Each of the ancient beings was then articulated and shaped to suggest their parent stone's arduous journey of gradual, dynamic motion.
These sculptures as the result of a collaboration between human and non-human entities, with the parent stone expressing an interest in transformation and transcendence: moving from the landscape of its rugged outdoor home to one in which it could participate in other facets of this world and share its story with human beings.
