TOTEMS (2022)
Lemon-scented Gum Eucalyptus wood
Grouping Size: 92” W x 20” D x 88” H
These ascending forms are reminiscent of both Hawaiian ki’i, and totems carved by peoples throughout history and across the globe. Each monument bears countless horizontal channels, a kind of carved tapestry on the wood’s surface. Upon viewing these marks, one may be reminded of humankind’s use of mark-making throughout time, each silently proclaming “We are here, now.”
Each totem is carved from Eucalyptus trees which were sown over 65 years ago in Mililani-Mauka, O’ahu, Hawai’i. This grove was planted to guard a small community from from nature's elements: wind, rain and landslides. Although these sculptures no longer stand where their mother seeds were planted, their physicality and visual strength is reminiscent of a group of guardians. Together, the grouping exudes a comforting presence and silently reminds us appreciate the natural world’s many expressions — both physical and immaterial.
