ASCENT (2016)
Black bamboo, twine
76” x 68” x 216” (193 x 173 x 549 cm)
Inspired by the Ikebana, or traditional Japanese flower arrangement, this artwork was constructed entirely out of lengths of bamboo. Rotating outwards from the tallest point, 25 pieces were configured in a diminishing sequence to create a feeling of upward motion. The sculpture existed in Thomas Square Park in Honolulu for 60 days, after which point it was deconstructed and returned to the forest where the bamboo was harvested.
