MENDED BOULDER (2024)
Granite, Indigo Pigment and Ink
Size variable. As shown: 21' x 12' x 42" (6.4 x 3.5 x 1.1 meters)
This aged boulder was extracted from the Sierra Nevada mountains, and explores the material texture of existence as a constant state of simultaneous shattering and mending. Containing fractures and fissures resulting from a collaboration between the stone and the events that shaped it over millions of years, I have split it to reveal its interior substance. The stone responded to this expansion by breaking according to its own will along several hidden fissures within it, faultlines formed during its past life in the Sierra Nevada mountains.
I communicated with the stone through the language of nature’s forces: tension, pressure, and gravity. This newly-revealed inner landscape was then anointed with indigo pigment, an act of honoring its long journey through time-- moments both violent and serene.
