An abstraction of the topographic contours of the Kīlauea volcano on Hawai'i Island, its layered form suggests waves of molten earth emanating from the piece's center. A monument to growth and a memorial to destruction, this artwork was created during the 2016 lava flow in Pāhoa, Hawaiʻi. This eruption devastated miles of land and countless homes but also expanded the size and shape of the island itself.
This artwork is composed of two separate sculptures. One is concave, emphasizing the recessed space within the crater, while the other is convex, with layers reminiscent of striations of earth.
