ENTRY (2016)
Plastic film, wood
120” x 168” x 120” (305 x 427 x 305 cm)
Entry is an experimental intervention involving presence and absence, and explores the many ways in which one uses their body to interact with and connect to their external environment.
The installation is a personal monument extending from the artist’s own memories of the tranquility found in the natural world, its form being a geometric reduction of Thurston Lava Tube on Hawaiʻi Island, an immersive architectural space produced by the creative power of nature itself. Entry extends from the artist’s own experience within the dark cavern -- a sensation which was simultaneously disorienting, mysterious, and whimsical.
The progressively diminishing openings in each layer of plastic film express both physicality and liminality, an invitation to enter and experience the open space with their bodies, rather than simply their eyes. While the material components of the installation are minimal, its physical presence enticing and enveloping the participant in a moment of transcendence, a brief escape from the confines of everyday reality.
