MEDITATIONS ON RAIN (2023)
Watercolour, Acrylic, indigo pigment, india ink on raw canvas
Each Canvas: 30” x 40” (101 x 76 cm)
This series extends from childhood memories of the sound of rain at night in Hamakua, Hawai’i. As a child with insomnia, I found solace in this nightly lullaby, escaping from trauma and dissolving into a place between the physical and mental landscapes which troubled me. Each of these paintings recall a different aspect of the rain, embodying its many forms between a tumultuous deluge and light misting.
Produced during a 12 month period during 2023, their surfaces were slowly built up by countless sessions of painting, and being left out in the rain. Thus, they are a collaboration with the very force which inspired them, shaped both by my hands, and those of Nature.
Wishing to share some of Hawaii’s rain with the arid desert, these paintings were created specifically for an exhibition at The Third Line, Dubai.
