Growing up at the foot of Hawaiʻi’s largest mountain led me to create a body of work investigating my own connection to the site. Instead of focusing on recognizable specificities of the mountain, the overall form is distilled down to its most essential nature, a geometric abstraction of the mountain's topographic contours. The sculpture’s subtle gradual slope, combined with its layered striations, mimic the way in which lava flowed from the ancient volcano over a million years ago.
Two iterations of this sculpture are pictured here.
