Washi (Japanese Mulberry Paper), Aluminum
This installation silently confronts the viewer, reverberating at a slow tempo, and effecting a pulse of energy from an unseen, central source. It builds upon previous installations in which i use material to facilitate an awareness of the invisible forces of nature which influence our lives. This sculpture is a visualization of change itself, and its form and layers illustrate this in size, shape, and angle. To me, it contains a presence which is more than simply the sum of its material parts -- It is an entity with a pulse and a breath.
Strata of washi paper are assembled in a layered progression, crushed and released to enhance their textural physicality. The liminal space within and around these intervals is simultaneously contained and activated, culminating in a numinous presence. Reminiscent of layers of clouds, waves of water, or currents of air, the overall experience is otherworldly, ethereal, intangible, and devotional.
