This series of stone sculptures extend from questioning the latent power which lies within seemingly vacant spaces. Through the removal of material from the center of a stone, I question what may be gained when a portion of it is removed. In the case of these stones, its internal textures and surfaces are revealed, and its hidden matrix is made visible.
However, I feel that something else shifts with this seemingly simple transformation. The opening becomes a means of bridging the stone to its surroundings— drawing in air, atmosphere, light, and invisible particles. In so doing, the stone intermixes and imparts some of its essence with its environment, fusing in a microscopic, yet significant way.
Seeing this as a window into the soul of the stone, I sometimes anoint the newly discovered surface with varied treatments - indigo pigment, gold-leaf, sumi ink, or paint. In so doing, I honor the spirit within its timeworn body, and contribute another layer to its ancient and awe-inspiring story
