ISLANDS (2019)
Relief / intaglio print from basalt, watercolor on paper
30”x40” ( 76 x 101 cm)
Prints from stone are cut and reconfigured to create references to bodies of water and land. The backdrop is brushed with a mixture of watercolor, ink, and pigment. Then, the cut sections are affixed to its the paper’s surface. From afar, the stone’s impression reads as an aerial view of terrain – but on closer inspection, the captured texture gives the prints a visceral physicality and weight.
A microscopic rendition of the macroscopic world, the stone's impression pays tribute to the stone's source: a mound of earth in the Pacific Ocean, and ball of earth in space.
