SEEING STONE (2025)
Seeing Stone (Mauka / Makai)
White Granite
H 57” x W 27” x 20” D
Rooted in its sense of place, this sculpture is attuned to mauka and makai— the mountain and the sea. Emerging as a quiet guardian, it holds both directions in balance through its two eyes, one oriented upland and the other toward the ocean. These openings invite the Hawaiian practice of kilo—deep observation—encouraging viewers to look into the spirit of the stone, their environment, and themselves.
In this exchange, the work offers a space of calm awareness and stability, a subtle yet powerful presence designed to soothe, center, and restore.
This granite boulder was sourced in the rugged Sierra Nevada mountains of California, and now stands beside the sea at the Mauna Kea Hotel’s spa.
